The fashion designer designs and creates models in line with the brand image. He or she is responsible for developing a complete range of products in line with the brand image..

Job description

  • To identify and assess seasonal trends
  • To create a sketchbook presenting shoe models: shapes, heel heights, soles etc.…
  • To define thems and lines for shoes (sizes, heights of the uppers...), and select materials and colours.
  • To put together a shoe collection, based on the number of lines and models, as decided by the porduct manager.
  • To present the collections in-house and to buyers.
  • To supervise the creation of prototypes until they are approved.

Research and development project manager

 

Mission

Depending on the design brief, the Research and development project manager carries out research and design projects on new substances, materials and products, and new manufacturing processes.

Job description

  • Watch out for innovations and research them (materials, processes, products etc.),
  • Assess the potential of these innovations by carrying out monitoring tests and trials.
  • Establish product sheets for innovations
  • Establish quality criteria for new products, processes and materials
  • Steer and manage the project

Pattern-maker / Cutter

 

Mission

On the basis of the model designs, the pattern-maker/cutter designes and creates patterns for production. (S)he may be required to carry out some designs using a computer.

Job description

  • Analyse the model on the basis of sketches and photos.
  • Making the pattern for the prototype, either manually or using CAD/CAM
  • As directed by the fashion designer, decide upon modifications to be made to the model
  • Transfer the model's specifics (stitching etc.) onto the pattern
  • Work out the different sizes based on the prototype
  • Provide the directions required for cutting

Knowledge / Skills

  • Manufacturing techniques and materials (leather, fabric...)
  • Pattern-making and cutting techniques, either by hand or using CAD/CAM, 2D/3D

Design office manager

 

Mission

In collaboration with different company departments, the design office manager carries out and coordinates technical studies relating to designing models before they are transferred to the production workshop.

Job description

  • Outline the manufacturing programme and technical solutions required for the production launch of the product
  • Validate the work of the pattern-maker and the planner
  • Study the technical potential of sub-contractors and ensure it is monitored
  • Working together with the production managerto resolve production problems (technical and organisational issues)
  • Take part in setting up the diary for the collection
  • Depending on the company; ensure that there is research into identifying new materials and processes

Knowledge / Skills

  • Put together, sterr and adapt a business plan taking into account the company's constraints
  • Define the technical characteristics and operating procedures, and apply them in production and/or with sub-contractors
  • Work closely with the production department, suppliers, sub-contractors and customers
  • Techniques and materials used in shoe manufacturing (leather, fabrics etc.)
  • Regulations relating to components and manufacturing standards

Prototype engineer / model-maker

 

Mission

The prototype engineer creates the mock-up or the sample for each model before it goes into series production, bearing in mind the materials and technical criteria defined by the designer, and the management and production requirements.

Job description

  • Interpret the designer's design to transfer the flat sketch into a prototype with its own volume
  • Create the prototype (or the mock-up), by cutting out and assembling the pieces of the model
  • Draft the manufacturing instructions for those models selected

Planner

 

Mission

The planner arranges for the modles to be manufactured on the basis of technical information provided by the design office, bearing in mind manufacturing parameters and the design brief.

  • Establish manufacturing processes (the order for manufacturing operations)
  • Drafting technical information for product industrialisation
  • Calculate production costs (production times, materials etc.)
